5 Lessons I Learned Working as a Customer Care Agent: Real Insights

Early in my customer service journey, I got a chance to work at a prestigious call center in Westlands . I must say that I  was destined for this job as I was interviewed via phone and landed it immediately.  This  reminds me of the importance of creating meaningful relationships. You see, a friend I had gone to college with had volunteered my contacts and informed me that I will be contacted.  I had a lot going on as a first time mum and missed the first call.  This friend called me and informed me that I would be contacted again and to keep my phone close. Just like that, I passed the interview done in Kiswahili and reported for my first corporate job as a call center agent . My entry into the customer care world helped me to harness skills in empathy , communication and problem solving . If you are planning to venture into this field, here are five lessons i learned working as a customercare agent that will help you. 1. Always be prepared ...

My Magical Journey with Ajira Digital

Let me tell you about my magical journey with Ajira Digital. I learnt about Ajira when I bumped into a certain poster on Facebook advertising for a class. I never paid too much attention to it until last year, when I became free and was interested in adding some knowledge. Ajira had me covered for a whole week. I felt the privilege of being in an online class. Not that I haven’t attended any online course, but this felt like I was back in school. Only that in this case, everything was completely free apart from my data and time. Having left college ten years ago, it was a nice experience having lecturers, but for Ajira, they refer to them as trainers interested in my progress. Let’s dive into these trainers; they are quite patient and really understanding. Imagine having to train over 100 people, and with some raising their hands in the course of the training. They are also qualified for their niche and answer questions amicably. They are oozing with so much knowledge that it le...

DOWN MEMORY LANE-

Image
Yesterday was World Radio Day-13th Feb,this day right here brings fresh memories of my first real job though an attachment at Baraka FM in Mombasa.Back in 2008, it was extremely difficult to get a job or an internship for that matter at such a prestigious radio station. So I approached a certain KTN journalist- Ngumbao who owed me a favor.May God rest his soul. You see, Ngumbao came to Airport View Academy to interview students who had passed in KCPE.While talking to me he asked what I wanted to be.For those who know me, know that from an early age I had it all figured out,I wanted to be a journalist. He said to me casually- if you ever need help ,come see me.So when I was required to be attached, I went to collect on that favor.Since that was like eight years before, Ngumbao did not remember but he said -why not.He called up his friend Mwangi who was the big boss at Baraka Fm and asked for a favor. You see....this girl right here received a call."Come report on Monday". ...

Mourning The Loss Of Our 4 Beauties

  1. Black Panther She was the firstborn and like all firstborns carried herself with grace and respect. When it was time for meals, she would not be seen rushing with the pack. She left the young ones to eat and have their share. She gave us seven awesome descendants and lost three saying they were God's finest and to him, they went. She was a proud mother and tended to her young with charisma and patience. She took her role so seriously that when it was time to move on, she would not do it  just like the mother who stands at the school's gate on her child's first day in school wondering whether she should go for her screaming child. Black Panther was loved for she was a black beauty. The firstborn in the family with whom all the hope was placed on. She desired to have other descendants and settled on the odd No 13. However, she did not live to see her descendants as she became ill and in two days became the first casualty in the family. She gave a grand bow on a fin...

As black as charcoal, Charcoal that is like tar, Tar that is like the back of my hand, Am the black child of a black continent. As red as blood, Blood that is like pepper, Pepper that is like my life, Am the black child of a black continent. As blue as the sky, The sky that is like the ocean, The ocean that is like my heart, A black child of a black continent.

Modern day adaptation of Rapunzel

Image
Once upon a time, there was a wonderful couple who longed for a child but had not been successful in getting one. After several trips to the hospital, the doctors discovered that Judith's womb had a problem, they advised her to undergo surgery to rectify the problem, and soon she became pregnant. She had cravings for ice-cream and would wake up at the wee hours of the night to eat it, one day she woke up and found that the ice-cream she had kept in the refrigerator was over. She sent her husband to ask for some from their neighbor; Mrs.Doubtfire since the nearest supermarket was several miles away. Upon hearing his request she gave him a scoop of her vanilla ice-cream and added a little sedative. She liked the ice-cream so much and the secret ingredient; the sedative helped to calm Judith’s nerves and soon she was fast asleep. When Judith gave birth, Mrs.Doubtfire loved the baby so much that she stole her from her parents and went into hiding. There was a police detective who beg...

Sheer Shock

Image
It is extremely hard to imagine of a day when life does not matter. The day she heard about it, she closed her shop and headed home. She wanted nothing to do with him so she locked herself in her room. Grace, her mother was worried just for a while, she kept herself busy and left June to her thoughts. She thought about him all day. His love was forbidden yet she had been anxious to conquer. She felt like a fool who had wasted so much time and energy.         She heard footsteps and for a moment closed her eyes. She did not open them for a long while until she felt her cheeks soften from the drops. It had been months since her eyes watered and she felt hopeless. What a shame! A strong woman of great wit and charisma reduced to a caricature because of him. They came just then, they must have been three women, two had children straddled on their back. They claimed ownership and June looked at them in a state of daze. They began fighting amongst th...

Being a writer is tough, Tough to think and rhyme, Rhyme that which ticks, Ticks and educates. Sometimes I look at a blank page, and become blank in mind, I want to express myself, But expression evades me. I shake my head, Shake my thoughts, Looking for what works, Nothing comes to mind.

Quarantine -Week One

Image
Quarantine  Week One of Covid-19  The atmosphere is pense, no one knows the specifics, everyone is afraid and passing their ignorance to others. Everywhere you go it’s all about the corona menace. It is on the news, it’s on every Whatsapp forwards and it’s on everyone's lips. My children are scared of it and what it holds. My daughter exclaimed today that she does not want to die before she even gets her own children! She is scared that corona will ruin her future. She has everything planned out and is wondering why corona wants to spoil her plans. My son is unperturbed by all the drama and brings drama of his own. His cousin tries to touch him as they are playing and he comes screaming" Mum, look at Hillary, he wants to give me corona!” He responds well to the many requests to wash his hands and asks why he has to do it over and over. Indoor Games The children have been indoors for three days and are getting restless. They have watched cartoon, played with their t...

THE BED

Image
The bed was tiny at the end of the ward. A little blue slab firmly printed above the bed. It read No 4 and she wondered if it should have meant something. She was warm in that tiny bed. Two white sheets, a brown duvet and Maasai bed sheets with the hospital name printed on top. She loved  windows, but could not open this particular one. She could not withstand the cold air. She particularly missed the sun, it was three days indoors. Once in a while the curtain opened slightly and a familiar face peeped in. She smiled slightly amidst the pain and engaged in pep talk to while away the minutes. The nurses were a nosy bunch, always talking about something. They gossiped on everything. They talked of a man whose wife had AIDS, of the Somali woman whose labor was prolonged. They noisily cluttered to their stations once in a while, to fill syringes and write in charts. They would appear at her bedside with blood pressure kit and thermometer in hand. They would disappear several hours ...

A New Dawn

Image
Once upon a time in the land of Batoto ba Mungu, there lived a frail old man by the name Mhela. He was a man of few words who would make everyone turn away when they heard his footsteps. He had a scar on his face that scared everyone who saw him. They said he was a known gangster in his youth. However, he did not look the part. He looked like a very bitter man whose life had taken a bad turn. You had to look at him straight in the eyes to see all the bitterness. His walking posture betrayed him. It spoke volumes about a man whose future was bleak. We were pretty scared of Mhela as young children. My mother would use him to scare us to bed. She would scream at us from the top of her voice. “I will let Mhela have you for supper, just wait I hear him knocking”, she shouted. We did not have to wait to find out as my brother and I scurried to our bed in fright. It was several years later when I learnt that my mother and father were in cohort with each other and it was he that went thr...
