LINDA’S CLUMSINESS

She sat staring into oblivion for such a long time that she did not hear him come in. He sat in the darkness with her, not daring to talk as she was in a lousy mood. She felt something move and glanced just for a while and saw his silhouette. She did not speak up, but sank back into her thoughts. He decided then that the best action was to walk away and that’s what he did. He went into their bedroom and jumped into bed. Linda was a hard person to please. She was always concerned about her image and what people would say that it affected her relationship with her friends and family. On this occasion, she was unhappy because her husband had forgotten to attend her birthday party. She had to lie to her friends that he was out of town to avoid the questions and the glances. Mark had tried to explain to her that he had a deadline to beat and that it escaped his mind that she had a party organized. The minute he remembered he had rushed home only to find the last of their friend pull awa

LOOKING FOR AN IDENTITY

Image
They call her black, a child of a black nation, They call her poor, a child of the slums, They call her little girl, a child of her mother, But what does she call herself? She stares into oblivion, Oblivion where she sees nothing, Nothing has come out of her life, Life that she has had to face. A memory comes to mind, Mind that has had to ponder a lot, A lot about her past and the looming future, Future that is meant to define her. She was once bright, Bright to read and write, Write she did for her life depended on it, It was after all her education. She thought it would deliver her from poverty, Poverty that she had been born into, Into a life of misery and anguish, Anguish she faced at the hands of a predator, It was a chilly morning, Morning that was beautiful and calm, Calm that she needed in her life, Life that had dealt her one blow after another. Mother said he was the Good Samaritan, Samaritan who would pay her

TRAUMA

DAY ONE I will never forget the day it happened. It will forever be etched in mind as the day I almost had my last breath. I was perplexed by how easily one can go from one world to the next. With no preparation at all. It is those accidents that leave you questioning what really happened?. I remember that I was really happy this day. I had just accomplished something great in my life and was glad that I could move to the next milestone. I was with my husband and his brother and decided that we will alight just before our stage to meet two of their sister. I was the second to alight and because the space between the bus and the pavement was very narrow I decided the best move would be to jump to the other side of the trench. That was the last decision I made that day since the next thing I heard was a big thud followed by my own cry of anguish. I was disoriented, felt dizzy and could not lift myself up. I was pulled up by two strong hands; I felt one as that of my husband and ano

Struggling to Survive

Mark was too bright for his age and the admiration of many. He had that sweet smile that made you smile for no apparent reason when you saw him. He was the kind of a boy that lit the room when he walked in. Therefore, he was loved and adored by many. It was a great shock to us when we learnt that he was sick, he had been diagnosed with Leukemia, cancer of the blood. He was too young to be sick, to have to endure the pain and anguish of the unknown, but he was strong and maintained his composure in front of people. I know this young soul inside out as I was selected to counsel him. I remember the first time I met him; he came in with his class teacher Mrs.Kebaya. She said that he needed help to manage his pain and school work pressure. So I sat down with him, he remained calm as I took out my pen and notebook. Occasionally his eyes would roam through the room, admiring the antic. So when I was ready I looked up and there he was smiling with no signs of depression at all. I asked him w

Analysis of Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

Image
Born a crime is an intriguing memoir by Trevor Noah that brings to the fore his childhood memories at the time of apartheid in South Africa. The title of the book is derived from the circumstances of his birth as Noah was a product of, Patricia, a black mother and Robert, a white father. In South Africa at that particular time, it was a crime for the natives to have sex with whites and the offense was punishable by a five-year jail term. Noah writes an immaculate piece about his childhood, but centers upon his reverence for his mother whom he says was rebellious and willing to succeed no matter the circumstances. Th essay will analyze the character of Noah's mother and her tribe's cultural practices and values, through three themes namely; racial inequality, religion and parental responsibility. Born a crime is a poignant and humorous book about a mischievous boy who struggles to find his identity in a world where he is regarded as a crime. It is a story about his relatio

Building My Spirituality

Image
I must confess before I joined CWA , I was very skeptical. I was the youngest in the group and felt misplaced. But then it was the only group I could join because compared to the youth it was closer to home. The journey has only begun and am psyched up with where am headed as I believe in embracing my spirituality. So many women out there ask themselves the same question I asked myself,"Who is eligible to join"? A typical answer would be anyone who is married or has a husband, which is a refutable fact. A lot of us have grown up seeing CWA women as mature strong-minded women. Mmh!!!The perception might be true, but that does not answer the question. Anyone can join CWA as long as you are a woman above 18 years. The word CWA stands for Catholic Women Association. So don't limit yourself for a chance to learn from other women. Join CWA in your local Catholic church and strengthen your spirituality. You are what they are looking for regardless of your situation. God kno
